How to Search Cases by Name
For a public name search in MiCOURT Case Search, type a last name and a first name. Middle name and birth year are optional. The birth-year box takes four digits only. A full date of birth is not part of the ordinary search. Wildcards are off limits. The name fields must contain at least four characters combined. If a name might be spelled several ways, run the search more than once.
- Open the Name Search tab in MiCOURT.
- Enter the required last and first names; add middle name or four-digit birth year only when useful.
- Choose Civil, Criminal/Traffic/Civil Infractions, or Probate where the case type is known.
- Use status and date filters to narrow results, then select the Case ID that matches the Wexford court and filed date.
- Record the case number, court, visible status, and next hearing before contacting the court for confirmation.
| MiCOURT name field | Type | Required | Wexford case-lookup note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Last Name | Text | Yes | Surname or business name; no wildcards. |
| First Name | Text | Yes | No wildcards; combine fields to meet the normal minimum. |
| Middle Name | Text | No | Optional narrowing field; no wildcards. |
| Birth Year | Text or numeric | No | Four digits only; public search uses a year, not full DOB. |
Press Enter to run the search. Clear wipes the terms and filters away. No registration is needed for a plain name or case-number search, so anyone can use the public interface.
Wexford Case Lookup Court Routes
Begin a Wexford case lookup with the court category, not a city name. The 84th District Court handles traffic, civil infractions, misdemeanors, felony first events, civil cases up to $25,000, small claims, and summary proceedings. The 28th Circuit Court takes felony cases after bindover. It also takes general civil claims above $25,000, family cases, and certain appeals. Probate holds estates, guardianships, conservatorships, and related proceedings.
A MiCOURT result can point you toward the right court. The correct Wexford office confirms the official file. The County Clerk keeps Circuit files. The District clerk division keeps District files. The Probate Register handles Probate administration. A Cadillac or Manton matter still routes through District Court. It does not get a separate city court record.
Wexford Case Lookup Search Rules
MiCOURT gives Wexford County users several ways to run a case lookup. Tabs handle name searches and case-number searches. A collapsible filter card sits alongside them. Results appear as public cards. The information is for reference only; it never replaces the official court record. Read the court field closely. A Circuit felony after bindover, a District misdemeanor, a Probate matter, and Friend of Court administration are separate records. One Wexford County docket entry may not tell the whole story across courts.
Status filters cover Open or Pending, Adjudicated or Disposed, and Closed cases. Categories break down into Civil. That group includes Domestic and Family Matters, plus Criminal/Traffic/Civil Infractions and Probate. Date pickers for filed date and offense date take a from-and-to range in mm/dd/yyyy form. A name search can flood you with results. The offense-date filter is the quickest way to narrow a Wexford County criminal or traffic case.
Keep the tool in perspective. The portal prohibits bulk downloading and scraping. It offers no public export of all Wexford County court records. Use a case lookup to identify and understand one public case history at a time. The court's retained record remains the authority.
How to Search by Case Number
Searching by number is the better Wexford County case lookup whenever a notice, a docket printout, or a court communication gives you the case or petition number. MiCOURT requires the case number itself. Year and case type are optional refinements. The interface examples show a year such as 2018, a number such as 1818003SC, a type such as SC, a shorter number such as 17489, and a number like 000001073 with type DL.
Never invent a Wexford County prefix. Formats differ, so type the number exactly as provided and add the year or two-character type only when you know it. A good case number also cuts down false matches from misspellings, common names, alternate names, or a party whose name changed after the filing.
Wexford Case Lookup Birth-Year Limits
The optional birth-year field is a narrow aid, not an open date-of-birth lookup. Michigan court rules shield dates of birth and other personal identifiers from ordinary public display in a Wexford County court docket. MiCOURT's secured public case search works differently. That authorized interface demands a last name, a first name, and an exact date of birth. Even then, not every case type records that information.
For a standard Wexford County case lookup, stick to the public name fields, the case category, and the date filters. Do not try to force in identifiers the system does not support. Before accepting a close name match as the right case, pause. Check the court, the filed date, the visible case title, and the case number.
Wexford Case Lookup Filters
Filters do more than shorten a list. They help you read a Wexford County docket search result correctly. A status filter separates open activity from a disposed case. A category filter keeps a civil matter from tangling with criminal or Probate results. Use the filed-date fields to pin down a case opened in a known period, and turn to offense-date fields when a Wexford County criminal or traffic case needs a tighter date range.
- Open or Pending
- A status category for a case with pending activity.
- Adjudicated or Disposed
- A status category indicating an outcome has been recorded.
- Closed
- A case status filter separate from the other MiCOURT categories.
- Case category
- The broad case grouping used to narrow a public result set.
Wexford case lookup results shift as the clerk updates court data. A blank next-hearing field tells you nothing; it does not mean the Wexford case has no future setting. Rely on your notices instead, and confirm any court date with the court named in the result.
What a Case Search Shows
A MiCOURT result card packs a lot into one screen. Expect the Case ID, Case Title, Filed Date, Case Status, Court, and any Balance where applicable. Next Hearing fields cover the date, time, and type, and a party section sits below. Click the Case ID for a deeper view. The header there can add Court Location, Case Entitlement, Judge of Record, disposition, and the disposition date. The public detail may go further. Parties, attorneys, answer or service dates, actions, hearing fields, and dated event rows can all appear there.
| Case ID | The linked identifier used to open the public detail. |
|---|---|
| Case title and party data | The public caption or descriptive title and visible party roles, which should be matched carefully to the court and filed date. |
| Filed date and status | Core result-card fields that help distinguish similar Wexford cases. |
| Hearing information | Next Hearing, Hearing Type, Hearing Date, Hearing Officer, and Location where supplied. |
| Event history | Event date, description, party or count, clerk or event number, and comment where publicly displayed. |
The event vocabulary reads like a case timeline. You may see notice, order, set case on calendar, motion hearing, motion filed, response, brief filed, proof of service, summons filed, appearance, and jury demand. One caution. A motion entry means someone asked the court for something, not that the court ruled. And the timeline does not promise a downloadable image of every filing.
Wexford Case Lookup Results and Files
A public Wexford case result is not the official court file. It is not a certified copy, a transcript, or a final document collection either. MiCOURT's public history is free to inspect. But the official record stays with the right office. The County Clerk holds 28th Circuit pleadings, files, and certified copies. The District clerk division keeps District criminal, civil, small-claims, traffic, and ordinance records. Probate uses its own register and administration office. Circuit copies cost $1 per photocopy. The office charges $10 for the first certified page, plus $1 for each additional page. The District and Probate copy fees are set by those offices directly. Any request should name the court. It should also give the case number and the exact product: a plain copy, certified copy, order, judgment, or transcript. Michigan Court Rule 8.119 splits free access to public case history from reproduction. The same rule also bars unredacted protected personal identifying information in online public records. Treat the search card as a starting point for a court-specific record request. Never treat it as a substitute for the copy process.
County vs Statewide Case Search
MiCOURT is the statewide public case-history layer. It is also the Wexford-linked route for the 28th Circuit Court. The county publishes no separate all-case portal that replaces it. What Wexford does offer is a ten-year name search through the Clerk pages. It covers felony and civil 28th Circuit records. It runs in person or by mail. Mail requests need the Clerk's form, the years requested, and a self-addressed stamped envelope.
| Search path | Best use | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| MiCOURT Case Search | Public name or case-number history, filters, results, and visible next-hearing fields | Informational only; no complete public document repository |
| Wexford Circuit route | Known 28th Circuit case context | District and Probate matters can have different custodians |
| County Clerk ten-year name search | Felony and civil 28th Circuit records by stated name and years | Not a statewide, District, Probate, or nonpublic-file search |
The right route depends on the court. A blank name search does not open a door to county FOIA, because Michigan court rules govern judicial case files.
Wexford Case Lookup Bulk Limits
MiCOURT's public terms prohibit bulk downloading and scraping. There is no public control for exporting all Wexford case data. The system posts no bulk result count, export rule, or maintenance schedule. It exists for individual public case-history searches, not a wholesale copy of judicial records. For one specific court document, find the Wexford case first. Then ask the custodian for the public copy you need. That habit keeps things in their proper lanes. A searchable history, a docket printout, a plain copy, a certified copy, and a transcript each have their place.
Wexford MiFILE and Case Lookup
MiFILE is Michigan's statewide e-filing system. It is not a public case search. The MiFILE registration page illustrates the account, address, court-selection, credential, and pro se or alternative-status fields filers encounter. Those fields do not retrieve public Wexford case history.
MiCOURT is the tool to use for a case lookup. Filing questions are different; confirm the court's current method before you submit anything. The MiFILE Available Courts list, last checked August 26, 2026, did not show Wexford, 28th Circuit, or 84th District. That reflects the list on that date, nothing more. The MiFILE login page shows the sign-in screen for account holders. A login grants account access only. So it does not turn the filing system into a Wexford public docket search.
Keep the two systems straight and you avoid a common routing error. Use the public MiCOURT interface to find visible history, then use the clerk or court process for the actual record or filing question.
Restricted Cases and Access Rules
MiCOURT keeps nonpublic information out of the ordinary public case lookup. Excluded categories include adoption, delayed foreign-birth registration, judicial admissions, juvenile and child-protective proceedings, juvenile guardianships, mental illness, name changes, parental waivers, personal protection orders and violations, surrendered newborns, infectious-disease treatment, extreme-risk protection orders, young-adult foster care, and wills. The access and sealing framework comes from MCR 8.119. Under MCR 1.109(D)(9)-(10), dates of birth, Social Security and national ID numbers, driver-license or state-ID numbers are protected. Passport numbers and financial-account numbers are protected too. You can file a written redaction request without paying a motion fee. Where a record is restricted, ask the Wexford custodian. Ask whether a public redacted version, a public order, or a permitted procedure applies. A general public case search gives no override.
Wexford Case Lookup With No Result
A blank result from a Wexford case lookup rarely means the record is gone. Start with the basics. Did you pick the right court, the right case category, and spell the name the way the clerk would? Check the case number too. Also verify the filed or offense date. One more wrinkle matters. MiCOURT applies a seven-year display filter, so an older criminal sentence may simply fall outside what the system shows.
Where a case sits can shift as well. A felony often begins in District Court. It moves to Circuit after bindover. For qualifying bindovers or remands on or after July 2, 2024, court-rule access provisions can change which court's record the public can reach. So call the court that likely holds the file. Do not assume a missing hit proves the case never existed. Circuit Clerk questions go to (231) 779-9450. District is (231) 779-9515. Probate is (231) 779-9510. Ask for public history or a specific public copy, not private information or a restricted file.
Note: Depending on the case type, its age, the court's data, and the access rule in play, MiCOURT may show an incomplete history. It may show a restricted result. It may show no ordinary public result at all.
